Overview

Garth Weiser (b. 1979) lives and works in New York. Marked by a sense of materiality and texture, as well as a striking synthesis of addition and subtraction, Weiser’s densely textured approach underscores his fascination with languages of abstraction and the physicality of the painted surface. Weiser’s multilayered paintings are defined by their underlying uncertainty as it is often difficult to ascertain each work’s exact composition. His process of painterly excavation – layers of paint are often destroyed and defaced – can cause the appearances of the canvases to transform depending on the viewer’s proximity to them.
